Mr. Key, currently a partner at Howrey LLP, has been representing both foreign and domestic clients regarding their intellectual property matters for over thirteen years, with experience spanning various technical areas that include semiconductors and microprocessors, broadband and networking, biotechnology, medical devices, and wind turbines, as well as the acquisition and protection of rights in industrial designs. Mr. Key has appeared on behalf of both plaintiffs and defendants before numerous federal district and appellate courts, including the Courts of Appeal for the First, Fourth and Federal Circuits, and the United States Supreme Court, and federal agencies, including the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) and the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Mr. Key has been involved in a number of reported decisions involving seminal issues such as the jurisdictional "sale for importation" requirement of the ITC, the scope of protection of trade dress rights, and the jurisdictional "case or controversy" requirement of the Declaratory Judgment Act. Mr. Key credits his success to the guidance and mentorship he received early in his career from other successful intellectual property attorneys, and to his continued fascination with and admiration for the human creative process, which he developed in his prior career as a professional musician.
Mr. Key received his JD from Georgetown University Law Center, where he graduated Cum Laude in 1996. He is a member of the bars of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the District of Columbia, as well as the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, and the United States District Court of District of Columbia. Mr. Key is also a member of the American Bar Association, American Intellectual Property Law Association, International Trademark Association, International Trade Commission Trial Lawyers Association, and the American Federation of Musicians.
